ELIGIBILITY

Membership is open to local universities in major World Cities.  Each member World City will have one representative university or local consortium of institutions.  The objective is to secure representation from World Cities in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia.

CRITERIA

WCU Member Universities Should:

  1. be at the heart of a World City and be recognized locally as a major university

  2. have a commitment to, and track record in, international activities

  3. be cosmopolitan in perspective and strategic direction

  4. be committed to close and intense two-way interaction with their local society and economy

  5. have academic strength in areas particularly relevant to World Cities

  6. be driven to meet the development of new areas of knowledge and technology

  7. be civically engaged with the broader community in the public and private sectors

  8. commit to act as a local hub for the WCU network

  9. be open to involving others in their city (business, community organizations, city hall etc) in WCU endorsed projects including relevant collaboration with other experts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As a part of WCU, each member university will be expected to fulfil certain obligations.  These include:

 

Ø      financial contribution to WCU through the membership fee

Ø      endorsement of the mission and work of WCU

Ø      facilitate contacts within their own World City

Ø      adoption of at least one of the operational tasks of the organisation (either semi-permanently or on a rotational basis)

Ø      adoption of at least one major activity or project within the key focus areas set by the annual general meeting

MEMBERSHIP FEE
At the current time World Cities University Network is funded by the membership fee.  Each member institution will pay an annual fee.  In 2007 this will be £5,000, but the amount will be reviewed annual.  Additionally, members are expected to volunteer to host specific activities, such as meetings
